Peter V’landys has responded strongly to what he perceives as “biased” media coverage regarding the Perth Bears, while also taking a pointed jab at the AFL over their objections.
After months of speculation, it has been officially confirmed that the NRL is set to embrace an 18th team in the West Australian capital for the 2027 season.
The partnership is valued at about $65 million between the state government and the league; however, not everyone is in favour of this groundbreaking development.
On Thursday morning, The West Australian’s front page declared “the bad news Bears,” featuring overt criticism from WA Premier Roger Cook regarding the decision.
When questioned about the initial reception of this news, V’landys did not hesitate to share his candid thoughts on Perth’s mainstream media.
“I believe the media coverage has been somewhat biased,” stated the ARLC chairman.
“The principal newspaper here is owned by Seven West Media, which holds the AFL rights.”

“Let’s be clear, they don’t want us here because they know we’ll be competitive and will be taking some of their market share – and we tend to do quite well in that area.”
When asked about whether rugby league officials had engaged with anyone from the competing football code, V’landys swiftly dismissed the notion that this would be necessary.

“No, I don’t see McDonald’s seeking permission from KFC when they’re establishing a new outlet,” he remarked.
“We certainly haven’t consulted with the AFL, nor do they seek our input.”
The Perth Bears form part of a broader expansion strategy for the NRL, which includes the addition of a team in Papua New Guinea in 2028 and the potential for a 20th team in the future.
