Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has shared his insights regarding the Gunners’ upcoming Champions League showdown against Paris Saint-Germain and the hurdles they face.
In their initial encounter, PSG edged past Arsenal with a narrow 1-0 victory, courtesy of an early goal from Ousmane Dembélé. Now, the Parisians will aim to safeguard their lead at the Parc des Princes this week.
The Gunners are determined to keep their dreams of clinching the Champions League trophy alive under manager Mikel Arteta, who chose to field his star players during the weekend fixture against Bournemouth rather than resting them.
Wenger, who came tantalisingly close to securing the Champions League during his tenure, addressed the challenges his former club must surmount to reach the tournament final while appearing on beIN SPORTS.
“What makes the Champions League intriguing is that, when playing home and away, you face a psychological hurdle to overcome before starting the second leg,” he remarked.
“For Arsenal, the mental challenge is straightforward. They need to go out, play, and win.”
“On the other hand, PSG’s mental dilemma is whether they should aim to win the match or focus on protecting their lead while playing counter-attacks. The clarity of the game plan is vital.”
“Moreover, it’s crucial to realise that not every player may fully share your viewpoint. If they decide to solely defend their advantage, it somewhat contradicts the team’s inherent style.”
“Luis Enrique has already asserted that they have another game to win, and I believe that with the final in their sights and playing at home, adopting a passive approach will be exceedingly challenging.”
In a previous league match this October, Arteta’s side triumphed 2-0 against PSG, and they will strive to replicate that performance against the Ligue 1 heavyweights, who currently seem formidable.
Dembélé was absent for PSG during their October matchup and may miss out again due to tightness in his right hamstring, although he has resumed training.
