Phil Gould has voiced his thoughts on the NRL’s possible takeover of the Super League, acknowledging that “something significant must occur” to salvage the competition.
This week, a startling report from The Sydney Morning Herald emerged, suggesting that the league’s governing body might acquire a 33 per cent stake and take control of the UK league’s management as part of the arrangement.
Confidential discussions held in Las Vegas, involving NRL officials alongside influential figures from Warrington and Wigan, have set the stage for potential acquisition talks.
During a comprehensive discussion on this topic, Gould indicated that there have been “whispers” over the past year about a “restructuring” of the English game.
“We’re hearing bits and pieces of this narrative, and yesterday was the most crucial,” he commented on Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles With Gus.

“I have received multiple calls from influential figures expressing that if the NRL seeks to take over the game, it would be welcomed with open arms.
“While the UK administration may not be keen, the major club owners would likely embrace it. Peter V’landys is always on the lookout for fresh concepts to grow and expand the game and has probably contemplated this for some time.
“The key owners have convened and expressed frustration with the Super League’s administration and management. They are eager for the NRL to step up and invest, as there is a pressing need for a revolution in that space.
“For the last 18 months, there have been significant discussions indicating that a drastic shift is necessary, along with a complete overhaul of how the game is governed … a rebuilding of the Super League is essential.”

The proposed competition would feature 10 teams, comprising eight from England and two from France, likely to be Catalans and Toulouse.
Gould also added that Australian clubs have been approached by UK clubs about potential partnerships to enhance their prospects both on and off the field.

“In recent months, we’ve seen interest from NRL clubs regarding potential collaborations with Super League teams,” he remarked.
“I’ve been advocating for the NRL to consider acquiring the Super League and its management, but they’re unlikely to make a hasty investment without proper evaluation.
“If the report holds true regarding a 33 per cent stake and complete management rights, it could serve as an excellent starting point for that relationship.”
Gould, who oversees football at Canterbury, emphasised the necessity for an overhaul of the international framework, urging the NRL to implement a continuous eight-year calendar.
