The manager of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim, has expressed the need for significant improvements across the board following a lacklustre derby against Manchester City that ended in a 0-0 stalemate on Sunday.
City’s aspirations for Champions League qualification hang in the balance, sitting fifth in the Premier League, a position that may still suffice to secure a spot in next season’s competition.
However, Pep Guardiola’s squad is only two points ahead of Newcastle, who have two games in hand over City.
For United, the solitary point keeps them in 13th place, despite having a more threatening presence in a game that otherwise lacked opportunities, as they failed to achieve a league double over City for the first time since the 2019/20 season.
“There are countless areas where we need to improve. We’re required to enhance every facet: building up play, transitions, and decision-making in the final third,” stated Amorim.
“Each player has room to grow; they’re here because they’ve demonstrated their abilities at other clubs.
“They possess the talent, but we still function as a team that relies on transitions. We need to spend more time in their half to create further opportunities.”
Historically, it has never occurred in the Premier League that neither City nor United has finished in the top four, a streak that now faces a formidable threat in the upcoming months.
A match that lacked quality, intensity, or aggression epitomised a dismal season for both clubs in Manchester.
After an unprecedented four consecutive league titles, City’s performance has significantly declined, putting them at risk of missing out on the top four for the first time since the 2009/10 season.
United’s only feasible path to Champions League qualification lies in clinching the Europa League trophy, as they gear up for what could be their worst Premier League finish ever.
The Red Devils have shown glimpses of improvement recently, yet they also suffered a 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, highlighting their ongoing struggles in front of goal.
“We just need a bit more killer instinct,” commented United captain Bruno Fernandes. “In the first half, we had too many touches when often one would suffice.
“We were patient and well-organised, but that killer instinct was simply absent today.”
Kevin De Bruyne featured just days after announcing that this would be his last season at City.
However, the Belgian’s recent performances reflect a decline from his once-peerless status as one of the Premier League’s all-time greats, as noted by Guardiola.
While City enjoyed more possession, United appeared the more menacing team on the counter in a sluggish opening half.
“We weren’t capable enough to punish them or inflict greater damage than what occurred,” said Guardiola.
“We’ll take the point. Winning would have been preferable, but we’re still in the game.”
Phil Foden came close to scoring just moments after the second half began, but squandered his chance against only Andre Onana to beat.
The game improved slightly after the interval as Omar Marmoush unleashed a powerful shot from a corner, forcing a save from Onana.
The introduction of Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount off the bench injected some urgency into the United attack during the final 20 minutes.
Both players had opportunities to clinch victory, with Zirkzee’s effort being deflected away by Ederson, while Rico Lewis made a crucial block on Mount’s follow-up shot.
There were friendly exchanges between Guardiola and Amorim at the conclusion of the match, yet these courteous interactions couldn’t mask the reality that both managers are surely dissatisfied with the current state of their teams after a disappointing season.
