Brian Riemer had to make adjustments to his starting lineup after Michael Damsgaard fell ill with the flu on Thursday morning, putting the Danish national team coach in a bit of a bind ahead of the first leg of the Nations League quarter-final against Portugal.
Damsgaard’s illness was a significant setback for Riemer, who had planned to feature the in-form Brentford player prominently in his strategy.
“He was supposed to be in the starting XI in place of Jesper Lindstrom. That was the game plan. He was a crucial part of our setup. We aimed to have an advantage in midfield, and I must say, Jesper stepped in and executed it flawlessly,” Riemer told the Danish media.
Ultimately, Jesper Lindstrom secured a place on the left wing, marking his first international appearance since autumn 2023.
“The young lad has faced some challenges. I’ve closely monitored his progress, as I believe he’s an exceptional talent. What I witnessed was a player ready to step up and fill the shoes of our most in-form player, Damsgaard,”
“When he came down with the flu, I definitely needed another coffee, I’ll tell you that. But what a performance from Lindstrom!” Riemer added.
After enduring a tough period at Napoli, Lindstrom has finally rediscovered his form at Everton, which has reassured Riemer of his readiness to contribute to the national team again.
The Everton winger will likely get another opportunity to shine when Denmark faces Portugal in the second leg on Sunday at 20:45 CET.
