Dean Huijsen, the young centre-back of Spanish-Dutch descent, has received a call-up to the Spanish national team from the under-21s, stepping in for Barcelona’s Inigo Martinez.
“Martinez has been excluded from the squad due to internal parameniscitis in his right knee, as confirmed by a report from Barcelona,” stated the RFEF prior to the Spanish national team’s training session in Las Rozas ahead of the March international break.
Taking Martinez’s place is debutant Huijsen. The 19-year-old, who currently plays for Bournemouth, was granted Spanish nationality on February 21, 2024, and is set to make his inaugural appearance for La Roja’s senior team.
Should the young talent make his debut in any of the Nations League quarter-finals against the Netherlands, it would effectively eliminate the chance of him being recruited by the Dutch national side. However, such a scenario seemed unlikely, considering his desire to play for Spain.
Although born in Amsterdam, Huijsen has strong ties to Spain, having lived in Marbella since he was five years old.
