Virgil van Dijk remains unfazed about his future at Liverpool, with the club’s captain acknowledging he is prepared to let his contract run its course until the season concludes.
The 33-year-old defender’s contract is set to expire in June, and discussions with the club regarding an extension have yet to yield results.
If an agreement isn’t reached, van Dijk’s successful seven-year tenure at Anfield will come to an end.
As he prepares to lead Liverpool into the League Cup final against Newcastle at Wembley this Sunday, van Dijk has openly expressed his wish to extend his stay on Merseyside.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract, it hasn’t affected his on-field performances or concentration.
“I might run this contract down completely, and then who knows what will happen,” he stated.
“What I aim to do is avoid creating any panic; I’m just keeping my head down and focusing on winning our next ten matches.”
“I’m confident that by the end of the season, there will be some updates, but what those will be, I’m not certain.”
He added: “It’s not as simple as a one-off discussion; there are various factors at play. As long as I remain calm with you (the media), there’s no need for anyone to panic about what the future holds.”
“If I were worried, it would show in my play, but that’s not the case. My commitment to Liverpool Football Club is absolute, without doubt.”
Currently, Liverpool boasts a 15-point advantage in the Premier League title race as they pursue their historic 20th English crown.
Van Dijk’s impressive performances have been instrumental in Liverpool’s domestic success, and manager Arne Slot has expressed his desire for the Dutch defender to remain at the club.
“All I can say is that I want Virgil to be with us next season. As for the contract discussions, that’s not my area of responsibility,” Slot remarked.
