The San Antonio Spurs’ rising star, Victor Wembanyama, is set to sit out the remainder of the NBA season due to a shoulder injury, as announced by the team on Friday (AEDT).
The 21-year-old has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, a type of blood clot, affecting his right shoulder, according to a statement from the Spurs.
“This condition was identified when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio after the All-Star Game held in San Francisco. He is anticipated to miss the rest of the 2024-25 regular season,” the Spurs confirmed in their statement.

The Spurs centre had been posting averages of 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, and 3.7 assists during the 2024-25 NBA season.
In November 2024, he registered a career-high of 50 points in a game against the Washington Wizards.
Wembanyama also made history by becoming the fourth-youngest player in NBA history to achieve this milestone, with only Devin Booker, LeBron James, and Brandon Jennings doing it at a younger age, the latter holding the record at 20 years and 52 days.
Before the injury, Wembanyama was a leading candidate for the Defensive Player of the Year award, averaging 3.8 blocks and 1.1 steals per game.
Unfortunately, due to not reaching the minimum of 65 games played, he will now be ineligible for the award.
