Patty Mills believes that his unexpected reunion with Ben Simmons in Los Angeles could pave the way for the controversial star to represent the Boomers at the 2028 Olympics.
This week, the Los Angeles Clippers welcomed Simmons into their ranks, acquiring the former No. 1 overall pick who struggled with injuries while at the Brooklyn Nets.
Interestingly, Mills joined the Clippers from Utah just a week before Simmons, and the two Australians now have the opportunity to play alongside seasoned players such as Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, and Norman Powell, as the Clippers currently sit in seventh place in the Western Conference.
Both Mills and Simmons have transformed from being part of struggling teams to becoming contenders, and Mills is optimistic that this unexpected turn of events could greatly benefit Australian basketball.
“It has always been my ambition to see Ben don the green and gold for the Olympics and major competitions,” Mills told Guardian Australia.

“I believe this can mark a fresh and exciting beginning for Ben, and I’m here to assist him in any way possible.”
Mills continued, “I had the chance to connect with Ben on a deeper level in Brooklyn, and now that I’ve experienced the Clippers’ environment, I think he can gain a lot from the hard-working culture here.”
An exceptional defender and passer, Simmons has yet to improve his outside shooting and faced considerable criticism for his restrained play during the Philadelphia 76ers’ defeat to the Atlanta Hawks in the 2021 Eastern Conference semi-finals.
Upon his trade announcement to the Clippers, Simmons confirmed that he has no lingering injury concerns and expressed enthusiasm about his move to LA.

“After discussing things with Ty Lue, it was clear everyone was open and straightforward,” Simmons said to the media. “They understand my abilities and what they expect from me.”
“It’s a lot easier for everyone when teams are candid and recognise what you bring to the table, how they can assist you, and how you can contribute to their success. I feel at ease here.”
Mills, who boasts 16 years in the NBA, mentioned that Simmons will mesh well with the Clippers’ perimeter shooters and will not be required to step outside his comfort zone.
“Ben doesn’t need to emulate my shooting style because he possesses unique skills that many players in the NBA lack,” he stated.
“His incredible presence—being tall, athletic, and fast—enables him to defend any player on the court and make passes that no one else can replicate.”
