Ben Gardiner has been officially appointed as Mal Meninga’s inaugural assistant coach for the Perth Bears.
Having dedicated two years to the Panthers, Gardiner played a significant role in their triumphs during the 2023 and 2024 premiership seasons, in addition to leading the Samoan national team.
In the realm of first-grade rugby, he has previously held positions with the Rabbitohs and the Tigers before his stint at the Panthers. Furthermore, he served as the coach for the North Sydney Bears in the NSW Cup.
“I’m eager to collaborate with new colleagues in Western Australia and to establish a remarkably successful team over the next five years as we promote rugby league and expand the game,” he shared in a statement.

“I’ve maintained a close relationship with the North Sydney Bears over the years, coaching their NSW Cup team and contributing to coaching and recruitment, in addition to working with the women’s team. These experiences have given me valuable insights into what drives that outstanding club,” he remarked.
“We need to integrate these principles into the Perth Bears to cultivate a synergy between the new and the established.”
Meninga expressed enthusiasm about the addition of some “Bears DNA” to his staff.
“Ben has a wealth of experience working with top clubs and teams at both the premiership and representative level, along with the Bears culture, which he brings to this position,” he stated.

“I anticipate Ben’s support will be pivotal in creating a club culture that will guide the Bears into a bright future.”
Phil Gould mentioned on Nine’s 100% Footy earlier this month that Gardiner is “held in high esteem” within the rugby league community.
“He has undergone an extensive apprenticeship,” Gould commented.
“We brought him in as a player, but he didn’t quite make it with the Roosters due to injuries. However, he has been immersed in the game for over 22 years, learning from some of the best coaches in the industry. He really knows his stuff and is very well regarded.”
Gardiner is set to commence his role at the conclusion of the 2025 season.
