SCOTTSDALE: Known as “The Greatest Show on Grass,” my recent visit to the Phoenix Open confirmed that reputation in spectacular fashion.
Despite my family’s ardent affection for the game—whether it’s enjoying a round on the weekend or tuning in to major tournaments at the crack of dawn—I’ve never quite shared their enthusiasm for golf.
However, when the chance to be part of the PGA Tour 2K25 launch arose, I seized the opportunity to understand what all the fuss is about.
I left the experience thoroughly impressed, and it’s evident why this event attracts not only golf enthusiasts but sports fans from all around the world.
Even during the first two practice days before the tournament officially kicks off on Friday (AEDT), the crowds were lively and engaged.

The buzz built from mid-morning and lasted well into the afternoon, with DJs spinning a variety of tracks and drinks flowing liberally.
However, the event is about more than just a revelry of inebriated fans.
Families with young children eagerly sought glimpses of their favourite players, while dedicated supporters in their 70s and 80s mingled with the crowd.
The ease with which spectators could stroll around the venue and interact with one another really sets this event apart from many other sporting occasions.
If the atmosphere was this vibrant before the tournament officially commenced, it’s hard to imagine the excitement that will unfold later in the week.

Local reports suggest that as many as 280,000 spectators could descend on the TPC Scottsdale course this Saturday, traditionally the event’s biggest day.
This attendance alone surpasses several renowned golf tournaments in the U.S. and internationally, highlighting the unique status the Phoenix Open has attained.
This phenomenon not only invigorates the Arizona region but also provides an unforgettable experience for attendees.
As Canada’s Nick Taylor strives to retain his title, he’ll face stiff competition from a roster of superstars vying for a slice of the $14.64 million prize pool.
Australia, too, is attempting to capture some of this excitement with LIV Golf Adelaide, which aims to cultivate a vibrant party atmosphere that draws younger fans into the sport.
While I’m not likely to take up golfing any time soon, my two days at the Phoenix Open have offered me a newfound appreciation for a sport that I previously didn’t connect with.
