Western Bulldogs head coach Luke Beveridge has shared insights regarding Jamarra Ugle-Hagan’s future with the club, expressing a mix of frustration towards the troubled star but also emphasising the “big hearts” of his players who are rallying to support their teammate.
Ugle-Hagan has yet to feature in a match for the Bulldogs this season, as he has been frequently absent from training due to various reported off-field challenges.
In a detailed conversation with Nine’s Footy Classified, Beveridge disclosed that his interactions with the 22-year-old have been “minimal,” while he remains optimistic about Ugle-Hagan returning to AFL action later in the year.
The young forward’s social media presence has spurred considerable discussion, with Beveridge noting that he has received multiple messages from individuals claiming to have spotted Ugle-Hagan out and about.

Beveridge also remarked that the expectations surrounding Ugle-Hagan’s training attendance are flexible, noting, “He’ll train at the club from time to time.”
“There will be instances where he’s not expected to be in certain places, and that will be up to him. We’re working with him on this, and at times, we allow for some leeway,” he explained.
“Ultimately, the focus for everyone at the football club regarding Jamarra’s frequent absences is on what we can influence and control—that is, the playing group who are wholly committed to winning games and the support staff dedicated to the health of the team. That’s where our attention lies… and hopefully, we can welcome him back at some point.”

Beveridge acknowledged that Ugle-Hagan faces “challenges ahead of him” and explained the limited nature of their communication.
“It’s minimal unless he’s physically at the club; I don’t have contact with him,” he remarked.
“There are numerous third parties assisting Jamarra. The AFL has been proactive in supporting the football club and guiding things in a positive direction, which is crucial as our resources are finite. Given our player roster is just over 40, we need to ensure our players access the right support without being distracted.
“There are others caring for him and offering guidance, and I’m confident he’ll navigate his way back.”
Beveridge also mentioned that Ugle-Hagan’s management has not communicated any interest from other clubs to the Bulldogs and expressed hope that he would stay with the team.
“We’re passionate about him and have cared for him for a long time,” he added.
“Yes, there’s some frustration, but we’re understanding of what he’s going through… we’d love for him to re-engage and remain part of our football club… we hold on to hope.”
Reports surrounding Ugle-Hagan have suggested he may have lost the trust of both his teammates and the coaching staff. However, Beveridge refrained from declaring that trust had been lost, explaining, “The more I learn about Jamarra, the better I understand him.”
The coach noted that his players’ comprehension of the situation has grown as well.
“Due to the challenges he’s faced, I think his teammates have struggled to grasp that what could be a private matter has gained public attention through social media, leaving them uncertain and sometimes frustrated, especially since they are putting in so much effort,” he said.
“… As for the spotlight and the pressures that come with fame, he’s currently navigating a tough period, and he’s working through it. His teammates have become more understanding because they are special individuals with big hearts; they are primarily focused on helping him in life rather than just as a teammate.”
