Dom Sheed, a hero of West Coast’s premiership win, has announced his retirement after a commendable 165 games in the AFL.
The 30-year-old has faced a challenging time with injuries, managing to participate in only 24 matches since the conclusion of 2021.
His latest setback came in the form of a torn ACL sustained during the pre-season, which unfortunately curtailed his 2025 campaign before it even had the chance to kick off.
However, Sheed will forever hold a cherished place in West Coast lore for kicking the pivotal goal that secured the club’s triumph in the 2018 Grand Final against Collingwood.

This moment is etched in AFL history as one of the greatest sequences of play, kickstarted by Jeremy McGovern’s outstanding intercept mark in defence.
McGovern then passed to ruckman Nathan Vardy positioned on the wing, who launched the ball toward half-forward, allowing small forward Liam Ryan to execute a spectacular pack mark as he moved back to meet the flight of the ball.
Ryan quickly played on, delivering the ball to Sheed in the forward pocket, ably assisted by a timely block from Willie Rioli, who kept Collingwood’s Brayden Maynard away from the contest.
With under two minutes to go, Sheed composed himself and successfully slotted a goal from the boundary, putting West Coast ahead.

Commentator Brian Taylor described Sheed’s crucial kick as “inch perfect,” as the midfielder turned towards the Collingwood supporters and acknowledged them.
Drafted with pick 11 in the 2013 AFL draft, Sheed predominantly played as a midfielder throughout his career.
With his retirement, only Liam Ryan remains at the Eagles from that pivotal moment in the club’s history.
Both McGovern and Vardy are no longer part of the team—McGovern retired this season due to concussion protocols, and Vardy’s career concluded in 2021. Rioli has since been traded to Port Adelaide.
