The lead-up to Wales’ pivotal Euro 2025 clash against France was disrupted dramatically when their team bus was involved in a collision while heading to a scheduled training session at Arena St Gallen on Tuesday.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has confirmed that all players and staff emerged unscathed from the incident, which involved another vehicle.
Emergency services responded immediately, and while an ambulance was dispatched, reports indicate that everyone involved was unharmed.
Head coach Rhian Wilkinson and captain Angharad James were not on the team bus, as they were travelling separately.
In a press conference where news of the incident was breaking, Wilkinson expressed relief, stating: “From all accounts, everyone is OK, and our priority is to gather them together and get them away from the scene to reassess.”
She emphasised that the welfare of the involved individuals was paramount: “Football comes second to this… we’re understandably shaken being away from the team and knowing they had to go through such an experience.”
“Our focus now is to reunite them and remove them from the situation. We’ll check in to ensure they’re all in good spirits.
“This situation is still unfolding, and we aim to communicate as clearly and transparently as we can.
“Most importantly, it appears that the driver of the other vehicle is also alright. We’ll keep everyone updated as more information comes in.”
Consequently, the planned training session was cancelled.
“The Football Association of Wales can confirm that the Cymru national team bus was involved in a road traffic accident while en route to Arena St Gallen for their matchday training session ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 match against France,” read an FAW statement.
“All passengers on the Cymru national team bus and in the other vehicle have been reported unharmed.
“The FAW’s immediate aim is to get the players away from the scene and back to the Cymru training base to continue their preparations for tomorrow’s match.”
The timing of this incident couldn’t be more unfortunate for Wales, who are already facing pressure after a 3-0 loss to the Netherlands in their Group C opener.
A further defeat against France would likely extinguish their hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds before facing England in their third match.
With emotions understandably heightened, the Welsh squad must now regroup both mentally and physically as they face a particularly challenging path ahead.
