Bayern Munich managed a hard-fought draw against Inter Milan at the San Siro on Wednesday but, alas, their exit from the Champions League was confirmed. Manager Vincent Kompany took the opportunity to ponder the injury woes that plagued his squad ahead of the quarter-final clash.
The Bavarians missed a number of key players across both fixtures, succumbing to a late goal in a 2-1 defeat at home last week, followed by a gritty 2-2 draw that resulted in a 4-3 aggregate elimination from the competition.
“The primary concern leading up to the match against Inter was definitely injuries,” Kompany remarked to the media.
“We had to adapt to the absence of players like (Hiroki) Ito, (Dayot) Upamecano, (Jamal) Musiala, (Manuel) Neuer, (Alphonso) Davies, (Kingsley) Coman, and (Aleksandar) Pavlovic.“
Despite these setbacks, Kompany’s men put up a valiant effort in both matches, making life difficult for Inter, yet they will not have the opportunity to compete for the title at their home ground, the Allianz Arena.
“In the opening leg, I think we showcased a strong performance from Bayern Munich, though I’m not fixated on the result. In the return leg, we displayed a positive mindset in Milan as well,” Kompany noted.
“We created numerous scoring opportunities, outnumbering Inter in that regard. I have mixed emotions about this. The stark reality is that we won’t be competing in the Champions League final on home soil.
“There’s no altering that. However, we can take pride in our performance; we know we did enough to secure victory in those matches.“
When asked if the busy fixture schedule contributed to the injury crisis, Kompany responded, “Unfortunately, that’s beyond my control. Besides the numerous games, we face long travel times, and the pressure only mounts when we’re missing players.“
