Bayern Munich will be without several crucial players for Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Inter Milan, yet manager Vincent Kompany has full confidence in the squad he has at his disposal.
In addition to being without goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, defenders Hiroki Ito, Alphonso Davies, and Dayot Upamecano, as well as forward Kingsley Coman, Kompany also lost midfielder Jamal Musiala to a thigh injury during Friday’s 3-1 Bundesliga victory over Augsburg.
“What can I say? We find ourselves in a challenging situation. However, we’re in the Champions League and must focus on what lies ahead, rather than what’s behind us,” Kompany stated to reporters on Monday.
“The players available will give their utmost; those stepping onto the pitch have consistently trained at a high level and will make their impact.
“I have faith in these players. I don’t want to voice complaints or alter our goals or tactics. Those who play are 100% committed, which reflects the trust I have in them.”
Kompany was rather coy when asked about the possibility of Thomas Muller starting, given Musiala’s absence.
“I don’t want to divulge too much information; we’ve managed without Jamal in a few matches already,” the Belgian coach replied.
“We’re not at the season’s beginning but nearly at the end. You can reflect on the creative strategies we’ve implemented to fill his role.
“I need to evaluate what’s required for tomorrow’s match; replacing a talent like Musiala is difficult, but we also want other squad members to display their skills.”
Fan favourite Muller revealed on Saturday that he will depart Bayern at the season’s conclusion after the club opted not to offer the 35-year-old a new contract, but Kompany is focused on the challenge that lies ahead.
“The priority is preparation for the match against Inter; this decision deserves respect,” Kompany added.
“The career of a legend like him is remarkable, and respect is warranted. It’s a significant topic, but ultimately my role is to prepare us for the next match.”
Kompany brushed aside one final query regarding whether Muller would be featured in the game against Inter.
“No, I think that’s enough. Let’s get some rest and see who will be in the starting line-up tomorrow,” the manager concluded.
