Bayern Munich’s head coach Vincent Kompany has acknowledged the allure of facing Flamengo in the round-of-16 clash of the Club World Cup on Sunday, yet he anticipates the encounter to resemble a match typical of the Champions League.
The six-time European champions, Bayern, are set to face three-time Copa Libertadores champions Flamengo at the Hard Rock Stadium, with a spot in the quarter-finals on the line.
It’s precisely the type of clash FIFA envisioned when creating the tournament, but for Kompany, the challenge is one he knows well.
“Flamengo is an outstanding team that showcases a blend of tactical discipline, aggression, and a significant element of Brazilian creativity and flair,” noted the former Manchester City defender, now in his first season managing the Bundesliga powerhouse.
“Top-tier Champions League teams generally defend as a cohesive unit, and Flamengo possesses that same commitment. Hence, I view this match as akin to a high-calibre game in Europe,” he remarked.
“Flamengo exhibits clear structure and discipline, which are vital attributes for any elite team. They defend well collectively and can conjure up threatening situations with the ball,” he added.
Bayern heads into the fixture following a 1-0 defeat against Benfica in their final group stage match, where they deployed a weakened side. However, victories against Auckland City and Boca Juniors had already guaranteed their advancement to the knockout stage.
Despite Brazilian teams demonstrating their competitiveness against European clubs in this tournament, Kompany still notes the enduring spirit of Brazil’s traditional flair amidst their tactical approach.
“Brazilian football is synonymous with creativity—those moments on the pitch that sometimes defy our imagination,” he explained.
Similarly, Flamengo’s coach Filipe Luis, only 39 and a former defender for Atletico Madrid and Chelsea, has evidently scrutinised his upcoming opponent.
“I’ve never played alongside him and don’t know him personally, but I am well aware of his career and the strong character he possesses. Tactically, I have studied his team extensively, and even Burnley last season had some intriguing concepts,” remarked Luis.
“This year, particularly in the early stages at Bayern, I watched numerous matches. He has implemented some fascinating ideas, and as I’ve mentioned before, I aspire to learn from the best. Bayern has been a benchmark for many of us this season, and I’ve had the opportunity to observe many of his early games.”
“This is a team that has truly embraced his philosophy, and undoubtedly it will pose one of the toughest challenges we could encounter in this tournament. These are the types of games every coach and player dreams of participating in, making it a tremendous privilege,” he concluded.
Kompany may also have the option of including German international Jamal Musiala in his squad, who missed the match against Benfica due to a knock sustained in the game against Boca Juniors after having previously ended the season with an injury.
“He’s back in training. Ideally, we would prefer to have him available rather than risking his absence altogether. But regarding his role—decisions will be made tomorrow,” stated the coach.
“He’s here, meaning he will be part of the squad tomorrow. As for what will transpire, we’ll have to wait and see.”
