Bayern Munich’s coach, Vincent Kompany, has expressed that while the allure of facing Flamengo in Sunday’s Club World Cup round-of-16 clash is captivating, he anticipates the match to resemble a typical Champions League encounter.
The six-time European champions will take on Flamengo, who have clinched the Copa Libertadores title three times, at Hard Rock Stadium, with a coveted spot in the quarter-finals on the line.
This kind of matchup seems to be exactly what FIFA envisioned when they conceived the tournament; however, for Kompany, the challenge is a familiar one.
“Flamengo is an exceptional side, combining tactical discipline, aggressive play, and a tangible flair typical of Brazilian football,” remarked the former Manchester City defender, now in his first season managing the Bundesliga heavyweights.
“Most elite Champions League teams operate with strong defensive cohesion, and Flamengo exhibits that same discipline. Therefore, I perceive this match as akin to a high-stakes game in Europe,” he stated.
“Flamengo maintains a clear structure and discipline, essential qualities for any top-tier team. They defend solidly as a unit and can generate dangerous opportunities offensively,” he added.
Entering this fixture, Bayern is looking to bounce back after their final group stage match ended in a 1-0 defeat to Benfica, during which they fielded a less experienced team. However, victories against Auckland City and Boca Juniors had already secured their progression to the knockout phase.
Although Brazilian clubs have demonstrated their competitive edge against European teams in this tournament, Kompany acknowledges that remnants of the traditional Brazilian artistry still shine through their tactical discipline.
“Brazilian football is often associated with creativity—actions on the pitch that can astonish even the most seasoned players,” he remarked.
Flamengo’s coach, Filipe Luis, also aged 39 and a former defender for Atletico Madrid and Chelsea, has evidently researched his adversary well.
“Though I haven’t played with him or know him personally, I’m aware of his career and the strong character he possesses. Tactically, I’ve dedicated significant time to studying his team—even observing Burnley last season, which had some intriguing tactics,” said Luis.
“In particular, early in the season at Bayern, I watched numerous matches. He has introduced some very compelling concepts. As I’ve mentioned before, I strive to emulate and learn from the best. Bayern has been a point of reference for many of us this year, providing ample opportunity to observe his tactical approach.
“They have effectively absorbed his style, making them undoubtedly one of the most formidable opponents we could encounter. Matches like these are what every coach and player aspires to be part of, making it a significant privilege,” he continued.
Kompany may have the option to use Jamal Musiala, the German international, who missed the match against Benfica due to a minor injury sustained against Boca, despite finishing the season with a knock.
“He’s back in training. Having him available is certainly preferable. As for his role in the match—it’s a decision we will make tomorrow,” confirmed the coach.
“He’s here, so he will be part of the squad tomorrow. What happens from there—we’ll see.”
