Brisbane Roar has announced that goalkeeper Matt Acton will depart the club at the end of the Isuzu UTE A-League 2024-25 season.
Acton faced competition for the starting position from Macklin Freke, making 10 appearances for the Roar last season as Ruben Zadkovich’s team wrapped up the season in 12th place.
A product of both the Queensland Academy of Sport and Brisbane Roar Youth, the 33-year-old Acton has enjoyed nearly a decade with the Roar across three different spells.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I say farewell to this amazing club and its fantastic supporters,” Acton stated following the announcement of his departure.
“I had aspirations of continuing to represent my hometown club, but unfortunately, things don’t always unfold as we hope.”
“I want to extend my gratitude to the club for allowing me to return to Brisbane and play again where my A-League journey began.”
“I wish the club, Michael (Valkanis), the players, and most importantly the fans, all the very best for the upcoming season and beyond.”

The Roar have been proactive during this off-season with several significant ins and outs, as new head coach Michael Valkanis looks to mould his squad for the Isuzu UTE A-League 2025-26 season.
Milorad Stajic, a Bosnian youth international midfielder, has joined from FC Radnicki Nis. Joining him is James McGarry, a former Central Coast Mariners defender and Isuzu UTE A-League champion, who arrives from Aberdeen. Additionally, Hosine Bility has made his loan move permanent, and Western United striker Michael Ruhs has also signed on.
On the other hand, the club has bid farewell to club legend Jack Hingert after an impressive 14 years with the Roar, while Asumah Abubakar’s loan has concluded.
Furthermore, Lebanon international Walid Shour and Indonesia international Rafael Struick have also been released.
