Following a heavy 45-point loss to Brisbane on Saturday night, St Kilda coach Ross Lyon unleashed a scathing reprimand on his team, with footage surfacing of him berating players on the bench.
Lyon, who boasts 16 years of senior coaching experience, is known for his forthright approach and high levels of intensity. He’s never shied away from delivering tough talks when his players fall short of expectations.
During the Saints’ round seven defeat, Lyon’s frustration boiled over in the first quarter, particularly aimed at 19-year-old midfielder Hugo Garcia.

With the Saints failing to generate scoring chances early on, Brisbane amassed 24 inside 50s to the Saints’ meagre six, leaving them with an 18-point lead at the first change.
Garcia was later substituted out during the second quarter, a decision that former Essendon coach James Hird described as “interesting.”
Lyon’s handling of the young midfielder, playing in his 16th AFL match, has rekindled discussions about his fiery style of coaching.
“You can only unleash a spray so many times,” Hird commented on Nine’s Footy Furnace. “Ross is well aware of this, but you’ve got only three or four left in you before you need to be cautious about wasting them this early in the season. However, given the Saints’ current form, it’s clear Ross deemed it necessary to assert some authority.”
In his post-match interview, Lyon expressed no regrets regarding the early substitution of Garcia, even though Mason Wood later had to leave the field with a concussion.

He indicated that his midfielders were failing to adhere to their structured gameplay, stating that in certain scenarios, talking must give way to action.
“Hugo was part of the issue we faced at clearances and stoppages,” he told reporters.
“How well are you acquainted with the tactics of stay-ahead midfielders, swivelling and turning? At times, I reach the eye-roll point, you know?”
“There are moments when you must move beyond discussion and just take action.”
“I thrive in a results-driven environment, and I opted to make the substitution to attempt to spark a change.”
Lyon urged his players to keep their “heads on a swivel” after winning a contest, ready to spread in the right direction.

According to 9News chief AFL reporter Tom Morris, Lyon shared additional insights with his players once they were beyond the cameras’ watch.
“I’ve heard that Ross Lyon delivered a truly memorable spray behind closed doors to the team, and it was significant,” he revealed.
“It was one of those moments that everyone present will remember for a long time to come, and there remains a place in the game for that kind of approach.”
At present, St Kilda is sitting 13th on the ladder, having begun the season with a record of 3 wins and 4 losses. The club’s next challenge is against Lyon’s former team, Fremantle, this coming Friday night.
