Kyle Flanagan has received significant acclaim from rugby league icon Greg Alexander following his impressive performance in St George Illawarra’s standout trial victory on Sunday night.
The five-eighth notched a try and assisted in two others as the Dragons triumphed 26-8 over the Roosters at their home ground, Kogarah Oval.
The 26-year-old has faced scrutiny throughout his career, but he showcased a strong start to the season alongside his new halves partner, Lachlan Ilias.

During a segment on SEN Radio following the pre-season matches, Alexander acknowledged that he had previously doubted Flanagan’s capabilities but now believes the 26-year-old is poised for a standout 2025.
“He’s someone I didn’t think could perform [in that manner],” the Panthers great remarked.
“The pressure on the Dragons’ halves is significant this year. I viewed Kyle Flanagan as a rather limited player, but he had a solid 2023 for Kyle Flanagan standards.”
“Last night against the Roosters, he scored a try and registered two assists in the opening half hour. He achieved those two assists through a pass and a clever kick.”
“I’m uncertain whether he would be in first grade at any other club. Whatever Shane is doing, it’s bringing out the best in his son, and I expect he will have an excellent season… Shane has him playing at his peak.”

“Kyle delivered an outstanding performance on Sunday evening. The Dragons raced to an 18-nil lead early on, and I was truly impressed with their play.”
“Both Ilias and Flanagan showed remarkable defensive capabilities.”
Flanagan spent the majority of last season partnered with Ben Hunt, who provided 30 try assists compared to Flanagan’s four while being the predominant playmaker.
With the former captain finally obtaining a release from the Dragons, Flanagan seems to have a lighter load heading into this season.
Flanagan and Ilias are set to feature in the Charity Shield on Saturday, before their focus shifts to the season opener against the Bulldogs on March 8.
