Is 21-year-old Sam Darcy of the Western Bulldogs the complete key forward package?
This season, Darcy has made a remarkable impact, scoring 12 goals in just four matches, including a standout performance of five goals in his team’s defeat to Fremantle on Sunday. Alongside this, he achieved 21 disposals and 11 marks.
Geelong legend Jimmy Bartel has expressed curiosity about what additional elements Darcy might need to incorporate into his game that we don’t already witness.

Measuring in at an impressive 208cm, Darcy has showcased remarkable aerial ability. Bartel considers him to be on par with stars like Jesse Hogan, Charlie Curnow, and Nick Larkey.
“We often discuss ‘what will he become at 25, what will he achieve after a few more pre-seasons?’ However, I’m more interested in knowing what he isn’t doing right now,” Bartel remarked on Nine’s Footy Classified.
Panel member Damian Barrett responded, “Nothing. He’s excelling at everything.”
“In the marking contest, he’s assertive, and his goal-kicking is reliable… what more could he add?” Bartel continued.

Champion goal kicker Matthew Lloyd believes Darcy has navigated some of the most challenging elements of the game for young key forwards.
“The hardest trait to find in young key forwards is aggression, which he possesses in abundance since day one,” Lloyd stated.
“I saw glimpses of that determination during his time at Scotch College.”
“He carries a competitive edge… with those long limbs, opponents might think twice about getting in his way.”
“Initially, there were concerns about his kicking, but he’s been quite solid this year. His set shots are reliable.”
When asked whether Darcy ranks among the best players in the league today, Bartel replied, “He’s definitely in the conversation.”
Currently, North Melbourne’s Nick Larkey and Adelaide’s Riley Thilthorpe lead the Coleman Medal with 14 goals each, while Jesse Hogan is third with 13 goals after an impressive nine-goal haul against West Coast last weekend.
