The United States stands as the sole candidate to host the 2031 Women’s World Cup, while the UK is set to welcome the 2035 tournament, as announced by FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Thursday.
During his address at the UEFA Congress in Belgrade, Infantino stated that the only proposal for 2031 comes from “the USA, potentially in partnership with other CONCACAF members, and for 2035, it will be from Europe, specifically the home nations.”
He further revealed FIFA’s intention to expand the number of teams participating in the Women’s World Cup from 32 to 48, aiming for this change by the 2031 edition.
This announcement follows last month’s declaration by the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, which confirmed their intent to express interest in hosting the event.
FIFA specified that it would only consider bids for the 2035 tournament from either Europe or Africa, with the host nations to be determined at a FIFA Congress scheduled for the second quarter of 2026.
The United States, which is co-hosting the 2026 Men’s World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada, also reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing the 2031 bid in early March.
Although South Africa and Morocco were previously in contention, alongside other African nations, Infantino’s remarks imply that they are no longer in the running.
The upcoming Women’s World Cup is slated to be held in Brazil in 2027.
