Sydney FC’s head coach Ufuk Talay has confirmed that discussions are ongoing with promising talent Adrian Segecic about a potential new contract, as speculation surrounding his future intensifies.
This season, Segecic has made a remarkable impact in the A-League, currently leading the Golden Boot race with 12 goals, sharing the top spot with Adelaide United’s Archie Goodwin. However, the 20-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the season.
Following Sydney’s historic AFC Champions League campaign coming to an end at the hands of Singapore’s Lion City Sailors in the semi-finals on Wednesday, Talay was questioned about Segecic’s future with the club.
WEEKEND PREVIEW: What to know for Round 27 of the Isuzu UTE A-League
“I believe discussions are still taking place within the club,” the Sky Blues manager remarked to reporters following the match at Allianz Stadium midweek.
“Whether we see a resolution soon, only time will tell.”
Sydney FC claimed a 1-0 victory in the second leg at Allianz Stadium, but they ultimately exited the competition with a 2-1 aggregate loss.
Joe Lolley’s late strike in the 85th minute injected some hope into the home crowd, yet Lion City held their ground to secure a spot in the ACL Two final.
THE RUN HOME: How the Premiership could be clinched THIS WEEKEND, a storyline Aussie football hasn’t witnessed in a long time
“It’s disappointing,” Talay expressed. “We dominated possession throughout the match and spent most of our time in their half.
“We faced a team that was extremely defensive, looking for opportunities to counter-attack, but we struggled to break through their lines.
“If that first goal hadn’t been ruled offside early in the game, it might have changed the dynamics of the match.”
“We scored late on and continued to press, but ultimately, we lost our chance when we conceded that second away goal.”
Looking ahead, Talay’s Sydney will prepare for their Round 27 encounter with Newcastle Jets on Sunday, as they strive to clinch a finals spot in the Isuzu UTE A-League.
Currently, the Sky Blues sit in sixth position, just a point ahead of Adelaide United.
“Now, this is our focus since we’re out of the AFC competition,” Talay stated.
“We have the A-League ahead of us, with three vital matches to secure a position in the top six.”
“The players will need to redirect their concentration.”
