Thomas Tuchel engaged in constructive conversations with Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden following their subdued performances on the wings during the match against Albania. The England manager spoke on Sunday as his team prepares for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Latvia.
Both Rashford and Foden were substituted in the second half of Friday’s 2-0 victory at Wembley Stadium, where they struggled to make an impact. Tuchel emphasised the need for more aggressive runs into the box from both players.
He noted that Foden must forge stronger connections with the midfield, while Rashford has faced challenges with the timing of his runs.
“I’ve had conversations with both of them, including in front of the group. They understand that I value their effort, particularly off the ball,” Tuchel told reporters.
“The numbers tell the story, and when we review the match, we can see the effort they put into high pressing and counter-pressing. Marcus made numerous runs when we had possession, yet he was not fully utilised.”
“Phil might just be struggling to find his rhythm at the moment. However, both players are feeling positive, rightly so, and they are aware of our expectations. Ideally, we aim to create more one-on-one opportunities for them.”
While Tuchel refrained from revealing his starting line-up for the match against Latvia on Monday, he hinted at the possibility of introducing some fresh players into the squad.
“It’s just two days post-match, and we need to tread carefully,” he remarked.
“It might make sense to include some fresh faces who deserve their chance… perhaps a combination of both experienced and new players.”
In other news, winger Anthony Gordon has withdrawn from the squad due to an injury sustained during the match against Albania and has returned to Newcastle United for evaluation.
Gordon came off the bench towards the end of the game but was forced to exit with what seemed to be a hip injury.
A potential addition to the squad is Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, who received a late call-up after Cole Palmer had to withdraw due to a muscle injury.
Tuchel praised Gibbs-White for his positive reaction to the initial disappointment and shared that the 25-year-old was thrilled to receive the second opportunity.
“It’s highly likely that he will be included in the squad. Morgan is an incredible character, and I’m delighted to have him on board. He deserves significant recognition,” Tuchel stated.
“Playing for England should be seen as an honour and privilege. Everyone needs to set their egos aside, and that’s exactly what is happening, with Morgan embodying this in a truly admirable way.”
