Tottenham Hotspur were unable to secure a vital winning goal, settling for a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash against Eintracht Frankfurt. This outcome elongates their unbeaten streak at home in European competitions to 19 matches.
This encounter marked the first European knockout clash between the two teams since the Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1982, where Spurs triumphed with a 2-0 victory in the first leg at their home ground.
However, the opening scoreline wouldn’t be replicated this time, as Frankfurt struck first with their initial foray into the Tottenham half just six minutes into the match.
James Maddison was dispossessed by Ellyes Skhiri, who deftly sent the ball to Hugo Ekitike. The striker then cut inside and unleashed a powerful shot into the far corner, tallying his 20th goal of the season.
Despite going behind, Ange Postecoglou’s side responded well. Dominic Solanke’s header was comfortably saved by Kauã Santos, while Brennan Johnson’s attempt flew just over the bar from a difficult position at the back post.

Spurs’ persistent attempts paid off in the 26th minute when Solanke found Maddison in the box. The midfielder then squared the ball to Pedro Porro, who executed a stunning back-heel flick to level the score. The hosts ended the half as the dominant side, but couldn’t find the net again, leaving the match finely balanced at half-time.
The second half began with both teams showing intent, as Destiny Udogie and Jean-Mattéo Bahoya both found themselves in promising situations, only for crucial blocks to thwart any potential threats.
It quickly became an end-to-end battle, with Spurs creating more opportunities. Lucas Bergvall rattled the crossbar with a powerful long-range shot, while Son Heung-min saw his effort tipped behind for a corner by a determined Santos.
From that corner, Rodrigo Bentancur’s header struck the crossbar, and Frankfurt’s goal continued to evade further test. The hosts kept pushing for a second goal, with Maddison coming close, but Santos was once again up to the task, making an excellent save. The second half turned into a one-sided affair, with Bentancur finding another chance from a corner but facing yet another spectacular stop from the Frankfurt goalkeeper.
Ultimately, neither team could break the deadlock again, with Frankfurt perhaps relieved to head back to Deutsche Bank Park with a draw, having withstood significant pressure in the second half.
