Tottenham Hotspur has secured the signature of Japanese defender Kota Takai on a five-year deal from J-League outfit Kawasaki Frontale, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday.
While the financial details remain undisclosed, reports from British media suggest that the Europa League champions have forked out £5 million ($6.82 million) for the 20-year-old player.
Takai, who emerged from Frontale’s youth academy, was part of the team that fell short of clinching the Asian Champions League title, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli in the final held in May.
He has also represented Japan at the national level, making four appearances for his country.
Takai becomes the third central defender to join the North London club this summer, strengthening their backline following the signings of Luka Vuskovic from Hajduk Split and the permanent acquisition of Kevin Danso, who joined from RC Lens.
Tottenham marked an end to their 17-year wait for silverware with their recent Europa League triumph, although they faced a challenging domestic campaign, finishing a disappointing 17th in the Premier League.
