Tottenham Hotspur have officially secured the services of Japanese defender Kota Takai on a five-year deal from J-League outfit Kawasaki Frontale, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday.
While the financial terms were not revealed, reports from the UK suggest that the Europa League champions have invested approximately five million pounds (around $6.82 million) in the 20-year-old.
A product of Frontale’s youth academy, Takai was part of the squad that narrowly missed out on the Asian Champions League title, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli in the final held in May.
He has also represented Japan’s national team on four occasions.
Takai becomes the third centre-back to join the North London club this summer, enhancing their defensive options following the signings of Luka Vuskovic from Hajduk Split and Kevin Danso, who has made his loan move from RC Lens permanent.
Tottenham concluded their 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League last season, but the campaign was marred by their poorest domestic performance in nearly 50 years, finishing 17th in the Premier League.
