The season for Lucas Bergvall, a midfielder for Tottenham Hotspur, has come to an end following an ankle injury, as confirmed by manager Ange Postecoglou on Friday. Meanwhile, there are concerns regarding the fitness of Dominic Solanke and James Maddison ahead of their clash with West Ham United this weekend.
Bergvall was unable to participate in Thursday’s 3-1 victory in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final against Norway’s Bodo/Glimt due to the injury sustained during training. Both Maddison (knee) and Solanke (thigh) had to be substituted in the latter stages of the match.
“It seems that Lucas’ injury is serious enough to see him sidelined for the remainder of the season. He has strained some ligaments in his ankle, so he won’t be back,” Postecoglou told the media.
“Dom (Solanke) is not too bad. He’s still experiencing some discomfort from last night, but we don’t believe it’s anything serious. He’s a doubt for the weekend, but we’re hopeful it will settle down soon.”
“Madders (Maddison) is a more pressing concern given it’s his knee, so we’ve sent him for a scan. We’re just waiting for the results.”
Spurs’ captain Son Heung-min is also dealing with a foot injury that has kept him out for five matches, but Postecoglou expressed hope that he might be available for the second leg.
“Son is working hard and making progress. He’s still undergoing individual training but has been out on the pitch and feels better with each passing day,” he stated.
“We’ll assess how he’s tracking by Thursday to determine if he’ll be ready for next week.”
Currently sitting in a disappointing 16th place in the Premier League, Spurs have their sights set on the Europa League, which represents their best chance to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Postecoglou mentioned he is “super proud” of his squad after their impressive response to a 5-1 defeat against Liverpool, who ultimately claimed the title, with a strong performance against Bodo/Glimt that has put them in a favourable position for reaching the final.
“Throughout our European campaign, we’ve demonstrated some exceptional levels of performance and played attractive football. We’ve faced tough challenges and managed to navigate them with poise,” the Australian remarked.
“Last weekend’s match against Liverpool was tough for us, and it’s important to not disregard experiences like that. They need to evoke feelings of anger and disappointment, which they certainly did.
“I didn’t let the players off the hook for that match, but we had to quickly redirect our focus to what was a crucial game. I was genuinely pleased with the strong mentality displayed by the players throughout the European journey.”
