Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall has been ruled out for the remainder of the season following an ankle injury, as confirmed by manager Ange Postecoglou on Friday. Additionally, Dominic Solanke and James Maddison are also facing fitness concerns ahead of their match against West Ham United this weekend.
Bergvall missed Thursday’s 3-1 victory over Norway’s Bodo/Glimt in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals due to an injury sustained during training. Maddison (knee) and Solanke (thigh) both had to exit the match in the second half.
“It appears Lucas’ injury is serious enough to sideline him for the rest of the season. He’s tweaked some ligaments in his ankle, so he’s out,” Postecoglou shared with the press.
“Dom (Solanke) is feeling a bit sore but it’s not too bad. We don’t believe it’s anything severe. He’s a doubt for the weekend, but we’re hopeful it will settle down quickly.”
“Madders (Maddison) is more concerning because it’s his knee, so we’ve sent him for a scan. We’re currently awaiting the results.”
Spurs captain Son Heung-min has been contending with a foot injury that has kept him off the pitch for five games, but Postecoglou expressed hope for his return in the second leg.
“Son’s doing well; he’s making progress. He’s still in individual training but has been out on the field and is feeling better every day,” he commented.
“We’ll assess his condition by Thursday to determine if he’ll be available for the following week.”
Currently sitting in a troubling 16th position in the Premier League, Spurs are focusing on the Europa League as their sole chance for qualification for next season’s Champions League.
Postecoglou expressed immense pride in his squad after they bounced back from a 5-1 defeat at Liverpool, who have claimed the title, to secure victory against Bodo/Glimt, putting them in a strong position to reach the final.
“Throughout the European campaign, we’ve consistently performed well and played some exceptional football. We’ve faced challenging situations and have managed to deal with them in a composed way,” the Australian stated.
“Last weekend against Liverpool was tough. While you never want to ignore those experiences, it’s crucial to learn from them. They should fuel your frustration and disappointment, and we experienced that.
“I didn’t let the players off the hook for it, but we had to quickly refocus for what was a crucial match. I was extremely pleased with the players’ mentality, which has remained strong throughout our European journey.”
