Tom Harley is set to officially take on the role of chief operating officer for the AFL after a closely contested selection process with Ameet Bains.
The 46-year-old’s departure from the Sydney Swans comes after a six-year tenure, as he steps into this pivotal role, serving as second-in-command to Andrew Dillon.
A standout player who captained Geelong to premiership victories in 2007 and 2009, Harley will be introduced in his new capacity on Thursday, as reported by Nine’s Tom Morris.

“I’m excited to announce that Tom Harley has accepted the role as Andrew Dillon’s second-in-command at AFL headquarters,” Morris mentioned on 9News Melbourne.
“Harley will be officially announced as the league’s new chief operating officer tomorrow.
“His responsibilities will include overseeing strategic and growth initiatives, marquee events, and, importantly, managing relationships with clubs. The final decision came down to a tight race between Harley and Ameet Bains from the Western Bulldogs.
“This is a significant appointment, positioning Harley as the frontrunner to ultimately succeed Andrew Dillon as chief executive officer.”
Harley boasts an illustrious career in Australian rules football, having played nearly 200 matches for Geelong before retiring at the conclusion of the 2009 season.
He quickly transitioned into a front office role with the GWS Giants and took on broadcasting duties before becoming the general manager of football at the Swans.
Since 2019, Harley has held the position of chief executive at the Swans.
