Tensions were palpable at Punt Road on Wednesday morning as Richmond coach Adem Yze urged reporters to shift their focus away from the topic of Noah Balta.
On Tuesday, Balta received a court-ordered curfew, an alcohol prohibition, and was required to pay his assault victim $45,000. As a result, he will be unavailable for this week’s match against Melbourne and is also sidelined from any night games or interstate fixtures for the next three months.
Consequently, Yze faced a barrage of inquiries regarding the club’s actions, their earlier decision to field Balta, and the defender’s emotional state in the aftermath.

After reiterating the topic several times, Yze declared, “That makes about six questions I’ve answered regarding Noah… Let’s move on.”
Richmond’s media manager was also keen to steer the conversation toward Thursday night’s game.
“Let’s move on, everyone,” media manager Nicki Malady interjected. “We’re finished with Balta. We have a match tomorrow night. We discuss him frequently. It’s time to shift gears. This press conference is about the upcoming game, let’s keep our focus there.”
Balta won’t participate in the VFL for Richmond this week either, despite being unavailable for AFL selection. Yze indicated that it would be best for the young defender to take a weekend of rest.
“Yesterday was quite taxing for him. He had a three-hour round trip to Albury following a five-day break. We need to take care of him, and he’ll look forward to our match against Hawthorn next week … he’ll rejoin the team,” he explained.

This year, Balta has yet to address the media following the incident in December 2024. Yze noted that Balta would speak when he feels ready.
“He will talk in due course. It’s a challenging time for him. There are plenty of players who prefer not to engage with the media. They aren’t trained for it, and given what he’s been through recently, there’s a natural concern about what he might say,” the Tigers’ coach explained.
“His mood is obviously low; he’s emotional and disappointed. He’ll express himself when the time is right, and you will sense his remorse.”
Balta played a crucial role in Richmond’s round six victory over Gold Coast, demonstrating strong defensive capabilities in what was his first game back for the season.
