Kristian Woolf’s inaugural season as the head coach of the Dolphins has begun with a series of unfortunate events, leaving former player Andrew Johns perplexed by how the team is integrating their star talent.
The NRL’s latest franchise has shown promise at the start of their first three fixtures but has struggled to sustain their performance and maintain a lead for the entirety of the match.
Woolf’s side managed to keep the Wests Tigers, who were last year’s wooden spoon recipients, at bay until the 68th minute, yet faltered in the closing stages of the game.
The Dolphins committed 12 errors and conceded seven penalties during their 30-18 loss at Redcliffe Stadium, a worrying trend for the team.

“The Dolphins are performing poorly,” Johns commented on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show. “They’ve been unable to secure victory in the tight games. Winning those critical matches is essential.”
The Dolphins will be eager to reverse their fortunes and prevent Woolf from falling prey to the supposed ‘Wayne Bennett curse’—a notion suggesting that anyone succeeding Bennett tends to struggle early in their role.
Johns insists the potential is there, yet emphasises the necessity for Woolf to optimise the performance of key players.
“It’s crucial for them to figure out how to get Hamiso and Herbie Farnworth more involved,” he stated.
“I’m not certain about the best way to incorporate Hamiso into the game… but he isn’t getting enough space to make an impact. Adjustments must be made to provide them with better opportunities.”

Billy Slater has suggested that the Maroons star needs to get involved with the ball more frequently.
“As a fullback, it’s important to identify and utilise your strengths,” Slater noted.
“He’s an exceptional ball runner, so whether that means engaging in quick plays near the ruck is vital—something we haven’t seen much from the Dolphins.”
“To create opportunities for your star players, the entire team’s structure must facilitate getting them the ball in advantageous positions. They must seek out those chances for the Hammer.”

While Johns was underwhelmed by the overall team performance, he couldn’t overlook the individual brilliance exhibited by star halfback Isaiya Katoa.
“Isaiya Katoa was the standout; he really carried the team,” Johns remarked.
“His passing, kicking, and especially his running were exceptional. He’s an incredible player, a real talent.”
Katoa ended the match against the Tigers with seven tackle breaks and 115 running metres, although some moments of inexperience were still present.

Slater pointed out that the Dolphins missed a chance to extend their lead with a penalty goal in the second half, opting instead to go for a try.
“This will be a valuable lesson for the young halfback, and perhaps Kodi Nikorima should also assume some responsibility in that regard,” Slater mentioned.
“When you’re leading by six points, having the opportunity to increase the margin with a penalty goal can greatly affect the opposition’s mentality and potentially secure your position.”
