In an exhilarating start to the U21 Euros, Finland and the Netherlands played out a hard-fought draw, with the Dutch rescuing a point thanks to a thrilling equaliser in the dying moments of the match.
Netherlands head coach Michael Reiziger made several changes to his line-up, swapping out three players from last week’s 3-0 victory over Ivory Coast’s U23s. In came Ian Maatsen, who surprisingly shifted into midfield, along with Jorrel Hato and Robin Roefs, while Neraysho Kasanwirjo, Ezechiel Banzuzi, and an injured Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro were dropped.
Finland, meanwhile, featured seven new faces from their last friendly against Slovenia U21 back in March, with Chelsea goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom stepping into the starting role and striker Naatan Skytta making his return to the starting XI.

Following a shaky opening, Finland established a sturdy defensive setup that the Dutch struggled to penetrate. Despite their possession, the Netherlands found themselves in a desperate battle to salvage the match.
A couple of costly errors from Ruben van Bommel and Ian Maatsen opened the door for the young Finnish side, allowing Royale Union Saint Gilloise’s striker Casper Terho to slot home calmly, putting Finland ahead 1-0.
Another slip-up from Ajax’s Youri Regeer then allowed Finland to exploit the opening for a second goal, with Aberdeen’s Topi Keskinen beating Roefs at his near post to make it 2-0.
Crucial Half-Time Shift
In a pivotal move, Reiziger brought on Luciano Valente from FC Groningen for Regeer at half-time—a substitution that proved immediately impactful as Valente netted to bring the Dutch back to 2-1 in the 59th minute.
The Netherlands took control of the second half, crafting numerous opportunities, yet an equaliser eluded them until late in the encounter.
It was once again Valente who found the breakthrough, linking up with AZ winger Ernest Poku on the edge of the penalty area, with Poku driving a low shot into the far corner to level the match.
In the end, the Netherlands managed to secure a draw in their opening game of the U21 Euros in Slovakia. They will need to step up their performance as they set their sights on group leaders Denmark, who claimed a 3-2 win over Ukraine in their first match.
Finland will reflect positively on their opening draw as they gear up for a challenging encounter with Ukraine this Sunday.
