Romelu Lukaku is on a mission to elevate Napoli to new heights. The Belgian forward is committed to bringing another Scudetto to Antonio Conte, a coach who has consistently unlocked his full potential like no other.
Back in 2021, the pair celebrated the pinnacle of Italian football while donning the Inter jersey together, and this year, they could replicate that success wearing Napoli’s blue. Achieving this would be a remarkable feat for both Lukaku and Conte.
At the start of the season, the majority of expectations and forecasts favoured Simone Inzaghi’s Inter. However, Matteo Politano and his teammates have remained steadfast in their belief.
Currently, they are locked in a fierce battle, trading points game by game despite a significant technical disparity between the two squads, especially after the winter transfer market only widened that gap further.
Last weekend, Inter secured a comfortable victory over Lecce, with goals from Marko Arnautovic, Lautaro Martinez, and Yann Bisseck (Roberto Piccoli’s goal was merely a consolation).
In response, Napoli displayed a commanding performance with a 3–0 triumph against Empoli, a match which was largely one-sided. Scott McTominay netted twice, while Lukaku added to his tally, having previously played a pivotal role in the opening goal with a stunning backheel assist to the ex-Manchester United midfielder.
McTominay shining in Serie A
McTominay, who has rarely played at such a consistently high standard, is now making waves in Serie A. While he has always exhibited moments of brilliance, he is now establishing himself as a dominant force in Italy.
This could be attributed to two primary factors: 1. The standard of Serie A is not as high as that of the Premier League, a statement that surprises no one. 2. Conte is the ideal manager for the 28-year-old Scot, who is currently one of the finest players in his position in the Italian top league.
However, the spotlight is firmly on Lukaku today. His special rapport with Conte is well-documented. The Italian manager has a deep admiration for the Belgian striker, and yet again, when tasked with selecting a leading attacker for his Napoli side, he opted for a player who previously sported the Roma jersey.
In the first half of last season, Lukaku was a prolific scorer, single-handedly sustaining Roma for several months. Unfortunately, he struggled during the critical phase of the campaign, which was a major blow for the Giallorossi.
Currently, he appears to be regaining his decisive touch at Napoli. Admittedly, he may not possess the same pace, agility, or explosive power he had four or five years ago, yet defenders still find it a daunting task to contain him.
Most of the time, they fail to stop him from scoring or at the very least from posing a threat. Lukaku has already netted 11 goals this season; while this may not be a staggering figure by his usual standards, his eight assists are noteworthy. Altogether, his direct contributions to the team total 19 goals. With Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s departure, someone needed to lead the charge, and that someone appears to be Lukaku.
Napoli eye a favorable run-in
With only a handful of matches left this season, every goal will carry additional weight. Errors can no longer be tolerated. Each goal could be crucial in the title race. This is when champions must rise to the occasion and make an impact.
As noted previously, the fixture lists for the two title rivals are anything but equal. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Inter will face a significantly more challenging set of matches.
Though Inzaghi’s Nerazzurri currently sit three points clear at the top, this difference in fixture difficulty may give Napoli a vital psychological advantage, especially as they have no cup competitions to divert their focus.

The next six league games will determine everything, perhaps even the fate of Antonio Conte, a coach not known for long tenures or extensive projects.
The stage is set for an exhilarating finale. Lukaku will be expected to drive Napoli forward, and based on his display against Empoli, he may very well be the catalyst that makes the difference as the season approaches its climax.
He has brought a Scudetto to Conte before, and he could do so again. Napoli are filled with hope, and Lukaku will be eager to partner with his mentor to turn that hope into reality.
