Trent Robinson has dismissed any possibility of Joseph Manu making a return to the Sydney Roosters this season, as the star centre prepares for a move to France.
The two-time premiership-winning player departed Bondi at the conclusion of the last season, dealing a significant blow to the club’s backline options while pursuing his ambitions in rugby union.
Manu has been showcasing his skills with Japanese side Toyota Verblitz, where he has scored five tries in 10 matches, though their season will conclude well before the NRL’s June 30 contract deadline.
Despite earlier speculation suggesting that Manu might rejoin the Roosters following his time in Japan, head coach Robinson has firmly asserted that this will not happen.

“We accepted this outcome a long time ago,” he commented.
“I’m not sure who reported that… it was never an option. I’ve known for probably six to nine months regarding his next move, and it wasn’t to return here.
“That was never on the table; I’m unsure if it’s been announced where he’s heading next.
“You media folks often get information before I do, but there are certain details we try to keep under wraps for as long as we can.”

Manu was a beloved figure at the club, having played all 181 matches of his first-grade career wearing the red, white, and blue, claiming premiership titles in 2018 and 2019.
Though his absence is being felt, Robinson is confident that players like Robert Toia and Mark Nawaqanitawase can step up to fill the gap in the centres for the Roosters.

“There’s been enough discussion on that topic, and it will persist,” he stated.
“However, we must back this up on the field. We have confidence in the players we have in those positions, and now it’s our job to demonstrate that they can deliver at the NRL level.”
Following a poor 50-14 defeat in their opening match against Brisbane, the Roosters will seek to regroup against the reigning champions, Penrith, this Friday night.
“This is a fantastic competition for that and presents a great challenge,” Robinson noted.
“The coaching process might be visible in the results, but it’s about the ongoing journey. How we adapt and improve is the exhilarating aspect.”
