In a gripping encounter at the SCG, the Western Bulldogs triumphed, significantly hindering Sydney’s aspirations for the finals.
Celebrating Marcus Bontempelli’s 250th game, the Bulldogs controlled the match for most of the evening, clinching a 16.9 (105) to 14.12 (96) victory.
The duel between Isaac Heeney and Bontempelli was a highlight, with both stars going head-to-head in a showcase of elite midfield talent.
Heeney scored five goals, including a remarkable four in the third quarter, putting in a valiant effort.

However, it was young gun Joel Freijah who emerged as the standout, contributing four goals of his own.
Sydney was without Tom McCartin, who was a late withdrawal, leaving a noticeable gap in their defence and allowing 208cm tall Sam Darcy to capitalise.
The 21-year-old rising star kicked two early goals, although his overall influence was somewhat curtailed by Lewis Melican’s solid defence.
The Swans struggled in the first half, managing just 6.8, while the Bulldogs stretched their margin to as much as 28 points during the second term.
In a pulsating third quarter, both teams exchanged goals, with Sydney even taking a brief lead before the Bulldogs reclaimed the initiative.
One downside to an otherwise high-quality match was the state of the turf at the Paddington End, which drew criticism from Jonathan Brown as players struggled for footing throughout.

Post-match, the former Brisbane star suggested that the AFL might need to consider relocating games from the SCG until the surface is improved.
The fourth quarter maintained the frantic pace throughout. Each time the Bulldogs seemed to take the upper hand, the Swans managed to stay close.
However, they could never manage to get any closer than that. In the game’s dying moments, Hayden McLean had a chance to reduce the deficit to a single goal but unfortunately struck the post.
“That sums up the night,” remarked Jason Dunstall on Fox Footy in response to the miss.
“Sydney will feel they had the opportunity to win this. Ultimately, if you don’t convert your chances, there’s no room for ‘could’ve, should’ve’.”
Brown is optimistic about the Bulldogs’ potential, asserting, “They can finish in the top four without a doubt. Their midfield can match it with anyone.”

“They’re a dangerous team. With forwards like Darcy and Naughton, they can take on anyone.”
For the Swans, Errol Gulden led the way with 30 disposals, while ruck Brodie Grundy tallied 43 hit-outs alongside 23 disposals.
On the Bulldogs’ side, Lachie Bramble notched up 28 touches, and Naughton with Darcy combined for six goals.
The Bulldogs secured a vital victory away from home, keeping their hopes alive in the race for a top-eight spot.
On the other hand, the Swans might find themselves three wins adrift of eighth place by the end of the round, a gap that may prove too challenging to bridge as they strive for form in the late season.
