Daniel Svensson made history yesterday by becoming the first Swedish player to score at the newly-expanded FIFA Club World Cup. His solitary strike helped Borussia Dortmund secure a 1-0 victory over Ulsan Hyundai, thereby guaranteeing their place in the Round of 16.
After a draw against Fluminense and an exciting win over Mamelodi Sundowns, Dortmund only needed a victory, regardless of the margin, against the already-eliminated Korean team to advance from Group F.
The decisive goal came just nine minutes before halftime. Jobe Bellingham held the ball up in the box before laying it off to Svensson, who struck low from 10 yards out.
“For our goal, I made a run into the box and Jobe Bellingham found me. I just aimed to finish quickly. It felt fantastic to score,” Svensson remarked to the media after the match.
The goal was one of many opportunities created by Dortmund in the first half at Cincinnati. For the 23-year-old, their early dominance was crucial to achieving the win. “Overall, it was a solid performance, particularly in the first half when we were in control. It was a well-deserved victory,” he added.
BVB topped the group with seven points, finishing ahead of Fluminense, and will carry their unbeaten streak into the knockout stages, where they will face Mexican side Monterrey. Given their trajectory in the tournament, it’s clear that Svensson and his teammates are brimming with confidence.
“We have a lot of confidence. Our performances have been improving steadily. We started a bit slowly, but I think today demonstrated an overall strong showing, so we’re feeling positive heading into the next round.”
