Teenage prodigy Estevao bid an emotional goodbye to Palmeiras following the Brazilian club’s 2-1 loss to Chelsea in the Club World Cup quarter-finals on Friday.
The 18-year-old winger, who is set to join Chelsea after the tournament, netted a remarkable equaliser but was left devastated when a late own goal propelled the Premier League team into the semi-finals.
Estevao’s strike in the 53rd minute showcased the extraordinary talent that has made him one of Brazil’s most promising young players, and underscored the void he will leave in the Palmeiras squad.
Collecting the ball on the right side of the box, he skillfully manoeuvred past Chelsea defender Levi Colwill before unleashing an unstoppable shot from a challenging angle that rattled in off the underside of the crossbar.
This moment of brilliance momentarily reignited the hopes of the Brazilian side after Cole Palmer had given Chelsea the lead in the first half.
“I’m thrilled to have contributed with my goal,” he expressed during an emotional press conference after being awarded Player of the Match.
“Sadly, the result wasn’t what we hoped for, but I believe we gave everything on the pitch, and that’s what matters most.”
The young talent reserved special commendations for Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira, whom he referred to as “a father figure,” crediting him for his development as a player.
“Coach, I can’t thank you enough for everything,” Estevao remarked. “You’ve taught me how to play tactically, which has been crucial for my growth. Palmeiras opened doors for me, and I’ve been extremely happy here.”
“My family and I are so thankful to the club, to Abel, and to my teammates for all they have done for me. I will forever hold Palmeiras in my heart.”
Estevao’s performance against Chelsea served as a bittersweet farewell, with his goal highlighting why he is so highly esteemed while also marking the conclusion of his time with Palmeiras.
Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca found the emotions to be much more straightforward.
“I’m pleased because we won, and I’m happy he scored; it truly is a perfect night,” he remarked.
