Following an exhilarating conclusion to the MSS Security Melbourne SuperSprint, the Repco Supercars Championship shifts its focus to New Zealand for the third round of the season – the much-anticipated ITM Taupō Super400, marking its second appearance.
The round at Albert Park was cut short owing to torrential rain, leading to the cancellation of the final race on Sunday. Consequently, Will Brown claimed the Larry Perkins Trophy, making history as the first driver to win this honour twice. Pole position holder Broc Feeney secured second place for the weekend, while Friday’s race winner Cameron Hill capped off the trophy podium in third.
After a successful inaugural event in 2024, the Taupō International Motorsport Park is once again set to host the Supercars. This New Zealand circuit has quickly become a favourite among fans and competitors alike, with its combination of challenging corners and swift sections promising yet another weekend filled with intense racing action.
Leading the championship standings, Will Brown arrives in Taupō boasting a seven-point advantage over Cam Waters, who had a strong start to the season in Sydney but faced a mixed outing in Melbourne. Both drivers are emerging as early title challengers, although Brown’s teammate Broc Feeney follows closely in third place after a solid performance in the initial rounds.
Chaz Mostert, currently sitting fourth in the rankings, and 2023 champion Brodie Kostecki, who is in fifth, are also in contention. Both drivers will be eager to make significant progress this weekend as the fight at the top intensifies.
Excitingly, the Kiwi crowd will rally behind their homegrown talents, Matthew Payne and Richie Stanaway. Payne, in particular, is one to watch, standing sixth in the championship points. Expect vibrant energy from the local fans as they support their New Zealand heroes.
The event will take place over three days, featuring two practice sessions on Friday, followed by back-to-back 37-lap races on Saturday, and culminating in a 61-lap feature race on Sunday.
The ITM Taupō Super400 will be hosted at Taupō International Motorsport Park from 11 to 13 April.
