The Gold Coast Suns have once again struggled to match their cross-town rivals, succumbing to the Brisbane Lions in the latest Q-Clash, 9.12 (66) to 7.7 (49).
The Suns began the season on a high, boasting a 5-1 record and a healthy percentage of 150, yet there were lingering doubts about whether they’d faced any formidable opponents.
Their real challenge arrived in the form of the reigning premiers, Brisbane, and it was evident that the Suns were outclassed, with the Lions now having won 12 of their last 13 encounters against Gold Coast. While the Suns did manage to narrow the scoreline during the final stages of the match, it was too little, too late.

In a game marked by wet and scrappy conditions, Brisbane displayed their superior offensive capability as Charlie Cameron and Callum Ah Chee combined for six goals within the first three quarters to secure the win.
Brisbane legend Jonathan Brown expressed his disappointment at witnessing Gold Coast’s lacklustre performance in front of a packed Gabba crowd.
“The stoppage work has been overwhelming. The Suns have faced this challenge from many teams, and we hoped their midfield could hold its own against Brisbane’s, but they were soundly beaten,” Brown stated on Fox Footy.
“This was their first significant assessment this season.”
“Damien Hardwick will be feeling quite disheartened. They are still on an upward trajectory, and hopefully, this is just a minor setback. They will aim to bounce back,” he added.
Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy shared Brown’s views, highlighting that this clash represented a major test for the Suns.
“This was meant to be a pivotal moment (for the Suns). There have always been questions regarding the quality of the teams they’ve defeated, and they have had an easier schedule. While last week’s win against the Swans was significant, the Swans were missing key players,” Healy remarked.
“This was always going to be the true test.”
The Suns were outmatched in the contest, particularly in the adverse weather, recording just 26 clearances to Brisbane’s 47 and losing the contested possession battle 147-121.
Brothers Will and Levi Ashcroft combined for a remarkable 63 disposals, showcasing the talent of the Lions’ emerging stars.
Brisbane will face North Melbourne in round nine, while Gold Coast will host the Western Bulldogs in another crucial challenge.
