Peter Shalulile has every reason to relish the occasion as he prepares to make his mark in the Club World Cup, stepping onto the pitch for Mamelodi Sundowns against Ulsan HD at the Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando this Tuesday.
At 31 years of age, he is poised to create history by becoming the first player from Namibia to compete in a senior FIFA tournament, going up against the three-time defending K League champions.
Shalulile has previously represented his country at two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and captained the national side that secured a 1-0 victory over Tunisia last year, marking Namibia’s first win in the competition.
“It’s a monumental achievement, and I hope many more Namibians will aspire to reach this level because it’s absolutely within our grasp,” he expressed to FIFA.
The Sundowns have been drawn in Group F, which will also see them face Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, followed by a clash against Brazilian heavyweights Fluminense.
“Namibians are buzzing with excitement, eagerly waiting for the day the tournament kicks off. They’re at home, glued to their screens, keen to see how their boy performs in the FIFA (Club) World Cup,” he added.
According to the organisers, the Club World Cup is touted as “the most inclusive tournament in global football, uniting top talents from all corners of the globe.” The expanded number of clubs participating this year provides an opportunity for players like Shalulile to take part in such a significant FIFA event for the very first time.
Out of the 81 nations represented in the tournament, 22 of them have yet to appear in a World Cup.
Among these nations is Gabon, with international star Denis Bouanga from Los Angeles FC, who netted the decisive goal against Club America to secure their spot in the tournament.
“For me, it was a magical moment and the most emotional goal of my career. When I watched the ball hit the back of the net, I was overwhelmed with goosebumps,” he shared with FIFA.
“I am incredibly proud to participate in this prestigious tournament, which features the top 32 clubs in the world.
“But to me, it wasn’t just about qualifying. It felt like a final. We won, and it’s a fantastic achievement for Los Angeles.”
Bouanga played the full 90 minutes in their Group D opener against Chelsea on Monday, where the Blues narrowly claimed a 2-0 victory.
