New South Wales faced a significant setback in the first half of Origin II, thanks to four major lapses in concentration, including a crucial obstruction penalty.
With just five minutes left until half-time and Queensland leading 20-6, Nathan Cleary appeared to have crossed for what seemed like a certain try, twisting through the Maroons’ defence by sidestepping and evading Kalyn Ponga.
However, video replays revealed that Stefano Utoikamanu, who had acted as a decoy but was retreating into the line, had obstructed Pat Carrigan just inside Cleary’s path. Utoikamanu had initially cleared the defensive line but, attempting to get back behind the play while it was still active, made a costly mistake.

“It seemed almost too straightforward,” Cameron Smith commented on Nine.
While Utoikamanu’s penalty proved detrimental, it wasn’t the only error made by the Blues.
Martin’s Moment of Madness
In a moment of frenzy during the 17th minute, Liam Martin found himself embroiled in two minutes of chaos.
The second-rower inflicted a big hit on Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, resulting in a knock-on, and made sure to communicate his feelings on the incident.
However, during NSW’s following attacking set, Martin turned the momentum back to the Maroons, dropping the ball after a robust tackle from Valentine Holmes.
Queensland capitalised, scoring a second try courtesy of Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, extending their lead to 12-6.
Luai’s Outburst
Jarome Luai faced scrutiny in the 22nd minute after being put on report for delivering unwanted contact to Reuben Cotter while on the ground.
This was swiftly followed by more disciplinary issues as Angus Crichton was penalised for a high tackle on his Roosters teammate Robert Toia.

Lomax’s Frustration
Minutes later, Zac Lomax found himself in hot water as well.
The winger received a penalty for elbowing Trent Loiero in the face during a tackle, resulting in Loiero being assessed for a head injury.
“That was a bit of ill-discipline from Zac Lomax… perhaps stemming from frustration,” Smith noted.
Valentine Holmes took advantage of the penalty opportunity, converting it to extend the lead to 14-6.
