Wayne Bennett has shared an encouraging message to the people of Perth as the state’s NRL ambitions face a challenging period.
Recent issues in negotiations between the NRL and the Western Australian government suggest that the prospect of the state acquiring the 19th franchise is slim.
Nonetheless, the coach of the Rabbitohs remains optimistic about the future.
“Don’t lose hope,” Bennett stated from Perth prior to his team’s matchup against the Cowboys.
“My first visit here was in the ’90s when the Western Reds were operating.”

“I’ve witnessed the remarkable growth in the sport here and the increasing interest, with far more people recognising me now than when I first arrived in 1997.
“Perth is ready for this; I’m certain they want it, and I just hope a deal can be reached, which I’m confident it will.”
Bennett, who was at the helm of the Dolphins when they first launched and coached the Broncos back in 1988, contends that including Perth in the NRL would bring substantial benefits.

“It’s a fantastic location with a rich sporting culture and would enhance our assets by introducing junior football and an NRL team here,” he remarked.
“The state is certainly in a strong financial position, meaning they could provide solid support, and the fan base here is excellent, so I believe it’s the right time to make the move… expansion is inevitable in the NRL; it’s just a matter of when and where.
“… I trust that the NRL stands behind its decisions. They supported the Dolphins three years ago, even when sceptics doubted the move, and that has proved to be a tremendous success.
“I’m confident Perth will follow suit – and let’s not forget about Papua New Guinea’s inclusion as well.”
