What’s Often Missed at Melbourne Victory: ‘Tomorrow Holds Promise’
Melbourne Victory has secured their place in the Finals Series, but head coach Arthur Diles believes there’s more to celebrate than just this milestone.
The Victory triumphed over Macarthur Bulls with a 2-1 victory in Campbelltown on Friday night, ensuring their place in the top six with one round left to play.

Goals from Socceroo Ryan Teague and Kasey Bos in the first half propelled Victory to victory in front of Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic, showcasing something that may be “overlooked” about last season’s Grand Finalists.
In the match against the Bulls, Victory featured a squad of 10 players aged 23 and under, including Teague and Bos, along with Nishan Velupillay, Jordi Valadon, Josh Inserra, Fabian Monge, Alex Badolato, Josh Rawlins, Jing Reec, and young goalkeeper Daniel Graskoski.
‘WE’RE WASTING MONEY’: Frustrated coach questions after Macarthur exits finals race
“I think what people might overlook at Melbourne Victory is that we had 10 players under 23 in our squad,” Diles remarked to the media.
“That’s very encouraging because it shows that tomorrow holds promise for this club.”
“Having so many young talents in our squad is something we believe in, and we’re excited for the future.”
Roar Coach Dismisses Speculation
Ruben Zadkovich is tuning out the increasing buzz surrounding the Brisbane Roar head coaching position as an emerging recruit breathes new life into the three-time champions.
Brisbane is currently enjoying a three-game unbeaten run, with two wins that have kept them clear of the wooden spoon following a 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix on Saturday. However, speculation is rife about who will helm the second-last Roar in the 2025-26 season.

As per Newscorp, former Ajax and Greece assistant Michael Valkanis is the leading candidate to replace Zadkovich next season. The ex-Adelaide United and Melbourne City manager was last in charge of Turkish club Adana Demirspor before his departure in September.
Zadkovich has been the permanent head coach since April of last year, having briefly stepped in for Ben Cahn during the 2023-24 season.
“It’s just noise,” he commented after the match. “That’s part of the job. When you take on these roles, you naturally carry the responsibility and scrutiny for the club. You’re at the centre of it all, and I was fully aware of that before taking charge.”

“As I mentioned, I was probably the sixth coach in just 12 months. When you consider how some players have left the club, it’s clear they might have faced similar frustrations due to the lack of resources required to compete effectively at this level.”
“However, my focus is on what I can control… how many young players I can bring in, develop and turn into saleable assets. How can I attract investment? How can I create an environment where my senior players feel valued, appreciated, and supported, even during tough times when the future isn’t clear?”
“Our aim is to create stability, to develop the team… Sometimes I feel my words are misconstrued, but I’ve known that it would take more than just a few transfer windows to make an impact at this club.”
Brisbane’s recent victory over the Phoenix featured the standout performance of January recruit Asumah Abubakar.
Although Abubakar didn’t score, he provided the key assist for Florin Berenguer’s winning goal.
Since joining, Abubakar has netted four goals and provided two assists.

“For insights on that, you’d have to check with Zac Anderson,” Zadkovich responded when asked about the player’s future. “I remember a year ago seeing an interview with Ross Aloisi in this chair. Zac oversees recruitment, and I’m confident he’ll make the right decisions.”
“All I can do is attempt to attract players with the budget available to me.”
“An exceptional player and individual, Abubakar has significantly enhanced the team’s prospects. That’s what occurs when you have a top-notch striker in the squad.”
“Initially, we relied on a young Thomas Waddingham to spearhead our attack in the first half of the season, which is clearly inadequate. We sought to sign different players in the opening transfer window but resources were limited.”
“We focused on developing Thomas, who had only scored once in the A-League prior to my arrival. Under our system and style of play, he’s now scored plenty. His recent success has paved the way for the club to generate some funds.”
“I was able to reinvest some of that into securing Abubakar, which demonstrates the importance of having the flexibility to sign quality players.”
‘Just the Beginning’ for Western Sydney
With finals football back on the agenda for a soaring Western Sydney Wanderers, head coach Alen Stajcic has a clear message: “This is only the beginning.”
The Wanderers are currently enjoying an 11-match unbeaten streak — a record run dating back to 2012-13 when Tony Popovic’s squad went 13 matches unbeaten — following their recent 1-0 victory over Newcastle Jets.

Before the current season, the Wanderers made the Finals Series just once in the past seven years, having reached three Grand Finals in their initial four years in the competition.
However, Stajcic has revitalised the Western Sydney team, and there’s even more to come from the fourth-placed side.
‘IT DOESN’T MATTER’: Coach addresses transfer speculation as star striker linked with overseas move
“It’s a fantastic accomplishment. I’m proud of all the players,” Stajcic stated post-game. “We arguably have the best group of leaders I’ve encountered during my 25 years in coaching.
“The staff are fantastic, cohesive, and aligned in our goals.
“We possess all the elements to establish a strong culture. I believe this underpins much of our success on the pitch, enhancing the team’s belief and confidence.”
“This is only the beginning. We’re laying the groundwork, and now we simply need to continue improving and working diligently.”
Heart-Stopping Moment for City: ‘No, Beachy!’
There was a pivotal moment late in Melbourne City’s scoreless draw against Adelaide United on Saturday night that saw head coach Aurelio Vidmar in a state of panic.
With just a minute left on the clock at AAMI Park, City keeper Patrick Beach ventured off his line to intercept an advancing Adelaide’s Dylan Pierias.

On the sidelines, emotions ran high as Vidmar amusingly recalled the moment in post-match comments.
“I was screaming ‘no, Beachy!’ Then he came out, and everyone on the bench started cheering ‘yes, Beachy!’,” Vidmar chuckled.
“In those moments, if you hesitate, it’s over. He had the courage to commit and made an outstanding save.”
City’s draw leaves them “with so much to fight for” against Sydney FC in Round 29.
Vidmar’s team currently stands second on the table, well positioned for qualification into the AFC Champions League Elite, but they’re only a point ahead of Western United, two ahead of Western Sydney Wanderers, and three clear of Melbourne Victory.

“Our focus is clear: regroup like we always do and push ahead. It’s a crucial match. Sydney will be a tough opponent, much like Adelaide,” Vidmar asserted.
He added: “The players are aware of what’s at stake. I’m always supportive when the effort put forth is at that level tonight.”
What’s Driving Auckland Following Historic Premiership
Auckland FC has claimed the Premiers Plate in their inaugural season, yet the Black Knights are far from finished.
Following City’s draw against Adelaide, Auckland clinched the Premiership and celebrated with a 1-0 victory over struggling Perth Glory on Sunday.

However, Steve Corica emphasised that the Black Knights are eager for further success as they set their sights on the Finals Series.
“It’s been a remarkable journey thus far,” Corica shared with reporters.
“But we’re far from done; (we want to) achieve another trophy and make history.”
He expressed: “(The goal is) to be the first team to achieve the double in their inaugural year. The Wanderers won the Premiership in their first year, so we’re aiming to surpass that.”
“That’s the players’ motivation, and it would be truly special if we could make it happen.”
Western United Approaching Club Record After Achieving Unprecedented Milestone
Western United have already made history in 2024-25 and are close to another record as the race for second place intensifies.
John Aloisi’s side narrowly beat finals-contending Sydney FC 1-0 on Sunday, moving within a point of rivals Melbourne City.
MATCH REPORT: Controversial winning goal sets the stage for an electrifying final round as Western United gains the upper hand over Sydney FC
Western have celebrated back-to-back victories against the Sky Blues for the very first time, while they’ve recorded four home league wins in a row — an achievement they’ve managed only once before in their history.
A victory over Auckland in Round 29 would set a club record of five consecutive wins for the 2022 champions.
“I’m genuinely pleased; the team did exceptionally well,” head coach Aloisi remarked in his post-match comments as Sydney found themselves just outside the top six.
“After our previous two matches… not necessarily the performance against the Wanderers, but last week’s showing against Brisbane wasn’t up to our standards. The response from the players was outstanding.
“Tonight, we were very good.”
