Spain’s coach Montse Tome has reported that Aitana Bonmati is making a positive recovery, although she emphasised that health remains the top priority as the world champions gear up to face Portugal in their women’s European Championship opener on Thursday.
Bonmati, the two-time Ballon d’Or winner, rejoined the squad on Monday after being released from hospital after a battle with viral meningitis.
“You observed a snippet of the training, roughly 15 minutes, but she was participating entirely on her own, and her recovery is looking very promising,” Tome stated during a press conference on Wednesday.
“Regarding today’s training session, she will be able to engage in some exercises with the team. She’s so keen – we have to rein her in a little – but according to the medical team, her recovery is heading in a positive direction. Health is paramount, and she has been able to accomplish all the required tasks.”
Barcelona midfielder Bonmati missed Spain’s 3-1 victory over Japan last week, leading to uncertainty about her readiness for Thursday’s Group B encounter in Zurich.
Midfielder Patricia Guijarro remarked that Bonmati’s presence has boosted the team’s morale.
“She’s ecstatic and genuinely happy, and of course, we’ll see her tomorrow and give her a massive hug. Most importantly, she’s just thrilled to be here,” Guijarro expressed.
Spain, who clinched their first World Cup title last year, are among the frontrunners for Euro 2025.
Bonmati has netted 30 goals in 78 appearances for Spain and was instrumental in their victory at the 2023 World Cup.
