Wolverhampton Wanderers extended their cushion over the relegation zone to nine points with a 2-1 victory against the Championship-bound Southampton. This result means the Saints have managed only two wins at St Mary’s across their last 30 Premier League home fixtures.
Awareness of their dire position at the bottom of the table seemed to free Southampton up early on. They started brightly and posed some challenges for their visitors.
The standout moment for them in the first half came on the right wing, as Yukinari Sugawara sent a dangerous low ball into the box aimed at Kamaldeen Sulemana, who couldn’t get a touch as the ball was intercepted.
Despite their spirited efforts, Southampton soon found themselves on the back foot, conceding against the tide of play. Jorgen Strand Larsen capitalised on a well-delivered cross from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, heading home with minimal opposition.
This goal disrupted the Saints’ momentum as they went into the half-time break, acutely aware that they had previously earned just one point from situations where they were trailing this season.
Despite the absence of the suspended Matheus Cunha, Wolves wasted little time in doubling their lead after the break.
Once again, Bellegarde provided the assist, with Strand Larsen receiving the ball just outside the box and firing a low shot past Aaron Ramsdale.
Sugawara made a strong run that culminated in a strike being tipped over by Jose Sa, signifying Southampton were not ready to concede defeat just yet.
Their hopes of making a comeback took a significant hit when Joao Gomes shot narrowly wide from inside the box. However, this miss inadvertently opened the door for the Saints, who managed to score with 15 minutes remaining.
A dynamic run from Tyler Dibling resulted in a shot that struck the far post, allowing substitute Paul Onuachu to effortlessly tap in the rebound.
In the end, Southampton’s search for an equaliser proved fruitless, marking their fifth consecutive league defeat, while they remain on the verge of eclipsing Derby County’s Premier League record-low points total of 11.
For Wolves, this victory could significantly bolster their aspirations for survival. They remain in 17th place, extending their lead over 18th-placed Ipswich Town following their defeat to Nottingham Forest.
