Tottenham Hotspur’s captain, Son Heung-min, expressed his profound happiness at returning to his homeland of South Korea for the World Cup qualifiers against Oman and Jordan, especially after facing a tumultuous spell with his Premier League club.
If South Korea manages to triumph over Oman in Goyang today and follows up with a win against Jordan in Suwon five days later, they could clinch one of the two automatic spots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals from Group B with two matches remaining.
In contrast, back in England, Son’s team is enduring a rough patch, which has hampered their European aspirations. A disappointing 2-0 defeat to Fulham last weekend has left Tottenham languishing in 14th place, amassing just 34 points from 29 matches.
“Despite the tough times I’ve been facing at Tottenham Hotspur, coming back home to South Korea and connecting with our supporters fills me with tremendous joy and energy,” Son shared with local media on Wednesday.
“I feel grateful that (on Thursday) even more fans will be there to support us. Our fans are always incredibly passionate, and we’re determined not to disappoint them in our first match of the year. We’ll give our all to make it an electrifying game.“
Spurs find themselves 15 points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea, whom they will face on April 3. Following their exit from the FA Cup, Ange Postecoglou’s squad now pin their hopes on securing silverware through the Europa League, where they are set to encounter a resurgent Eintracht Frankfurt on April 10.
