Son Heung-min has made a promise to “complete” his tenure at Tottenham by guiding the struggling team to victory in the Europa League final against Manchester United.
The Spurs captain has netted 173 goals in 451 appearances over a decade in North London but has yet to snap the club’s 17-year trophy drought.
The South Korean forward has experienced heart-wrenching losses in the Champions League final against Liverpool in 2019 and the League Cup final against Manchester City four years prior.
However, he is hopeful that next Wednesday’s all-Premier League clash with United in Bilbao will be a more uplifting occasion.
Despite a challenging Premier League season under Ange Postecoglou, the team has shone in Europe, reaching the first final of the Australian coach’s tumultuous two years at the helm.
In an interview with Korean media during the club’s Europa League final media day on Monday, Son stated: “We’ve discussed this for years. The main reason I stayed at Tottenham was because I wanted to achieve what others could not.”
“That’s likely why I’m in this position now. Every piece is essential to complete a puzzle. I believe I’ve collected all the necessary pieces to finish that puzzle.
“It feels like I’ve been missing the most critical final piece, and I’ve been searching for it over the past decade. I truly hope to finally complete the puzzle this time.”
“This time feels different, and I genuinely want to win—more than anyone else, I believe. So many people support us with the same fervent passion that I feel. If we prepare effectively, I trust we can succeed.”
Son has observed former Tottenham teammates celebrating success elsewhere after leaving, with Harry Kane recently helping Bayern Munich clinch the Bundesliga title earlier this month.
The pair formed a formidable partnership at Tottenham, and although Kane departed nearly two years ago, his successes have given Son “energy” leading up to their encounter with United in Spain.
“I actually texted Harry, and he called me back on a video call! I was overjoyed to see him so happy,” Son shared.
“He’s one of my closest friends, and witnessing a former teammate achieve such success delights me like family. With that positive energy, I hope he can cheer for Spurs in the match so we can secure a good result as he did.”
“Every match is special and meaningful for me, but this particular game feels like an opportunity that may not come again.”
