Son Heung-min has brushed off worries regarding his form and fitness as he aims to shift his focus from his struggles at Tottenham and lead South Korea to the World Cup.
The 32-year-old forward has faced challenges during a tough season with Spurs, currently sitting 14th in the Premier League under Ange Postecoglou’s management.
Once a staple in the Tottenham starting lineup, Son has dealt with a hamstring injury since late last year and has faced mounting criticism from fans about his performances.
This season, the Spurs captain has only netted seven goals in the Premier League and has not completed a full 90 minutes in his last five league outings.
On the eve of a home World Cup qualifier against Oman, South Korea’s captain acknowledged experiencing some “difficult and challenging” times with Tottenham.
However, he stated: “I’m in great physical condition.”
Son expressed that the opportunity to play in front of South Korean supporters for the first time this year would serve as significant motivation.
“Our fans always support us passionately, and we want to deliver for them,” said Son, who has made 131 appearances for his country, scoring 51 goals.
South Korea is on the verge of securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup, set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Victories against Oman at home and Jordan on Tuesday will guarantee their qualification for the tournament.
If they fall short, there are still two additional matches available in the Asian qualifying rounds to secure their place.
Unfortunately, South Korea will be without their defensive lynchpin, Kim Min-jae, following an Achilles injury sustained by the Bayern Munich centre-back.
